I'd love to hear your thoughts on what is a good "pre workout" (say if I'm going swimming or jogging) snack. I've heard complex carbs and some protein, but I don't know how to combine them. Also, I'd like to stay away from pre-made "nonfood substances" like gatoraid and whatnot. Thank you!

Honestly, (and not surprisingly) I’m a huge fan of hardboiled eggs. They are really easy to eat, small (I find it hard to eat before I work out but know I need to) and full of protein. You can make a ton of them and leave them in the refrigerator for the week. Also, oatmeal is really great. It has much more protein than you would expect and if you make sure to use rolled oats and not quick oats or instant, it’s really quite good for you. A handful of raw, unsalted nuts is always good too. Hope that helps!
